Day 4: Making Your First CallsToday is the Day….
Okay, today is the day we start making calls. This part takes tenacity. You will get turned down, it will seem like no one is answering their phones, and you might find yourself stumbling over simple sentences. This is all normal!
If you are excited to make calls skip down to where it says “Let’s make some calls!” below.
Now it is just us normal people, those of us that hate the idea of making calls. It can be nerve racking. I still get nervous. However, I want you to pretend something. I know it may seem silly, but I know it will make it a little less scary. I want to pretend that you were hired in a call center to make these calls. You are just following a script. This isn’t about your business. You are just ticking off the numbers.
The first 100 calls are the hardest. After that you stop getting the weird feeling in your stomach, it gets easier. You have to get some practice, that is all. The only way to really do this is to actually make the calls. No course will help you skip this part.
Let’s make some calls!
Here are a few recommendations:
- Block out 15-30 minute for calling in your calendar
- During this time ONLY make calls to your leads
- Once you have called all your leads, farm another 25 leads
- Don’t try to farm and call at the same time
- Don’t leave a voicemail on the first try
- You can call each lead twice a day if you don’t leave a voicemail
- Save your hottest leads until after you have had some practice.
Remember: we are just calling to get price lists! We are not trying to sell anything or close any deals today. We want to see if it worth our time and the time of the person that we are calling to even have a discussion about you selling on Amazon. We will call them back if we want to place an order and then we will talk to them about their policy for online sellers.
Here is what you are going to do:
“Hello, I am interested in carrying your product. Who would I speak to get to a price list, so we could look at putting together an order?
(Great. Can I be connected to him/her?)
I saw your company when I was looking through the vendors for XXX tradeshow coming up in YYYY. I saw your product and I (say something you love about the product or that you have done well with a similar product).
I was wondering if I could have you email me a price list or at least give me an idea of pricing on a few of your items?
Great. My email is ZZZ, but I will send you an email so you have it if you like, what is your email?”
If you get a no, put that in the comments but don’t delete the company. You can come back to it once you have more experience.
Here are some additional notes:
If you get a yes, put a note to follow up in 48 hours if you haven’t gotten the email.
If you get flustered, say you have another call and can you call them back.
If they ask you if you sell online- be honest.
Here is your goal- try and get 3 “No’s”- Yes, that is right… I want you to get rejected three times. That is it. If your first three calls go badly, your day just got shorter. If you get a bunch of yes’s? Well then, you are on your way to getting quite a few price lists!
When you get your 3 no’s
